The Great Space Center was started by the Assembly of Man under the leadership of Franklin Merrell-Wolff in the 1920's. Dr. Wolff had been told by an Indian sage that the spiritual center of every country was at its highest peak. An ashrama was constructed up the canyon at 7500 feet, one canyon south of Mt. Whitney. The Center is aptly named as the open sky and brilliant starlight naturally propels one into an appreciation of the Absolute. The spiritual quality of the land is profound, and has been honored for more than 70 years. The property consists of 400 acres situated at 6000 feet elevation bordered on one side by National Forest and on three sides by Bureau of Land Management property. It is 8 miles from the town of Lone Pine, the last 3 miles a maintained gravel road. Fresh spring water bubbles up behind the Center providing wonderful drinking water and a small year-round stream. Generators are used when electricity is desired. Much of the lighting is propane or kerosene. The housing consists of a 2 bedroom house, a 2 bedroom mobile home, a 2 bedroom guest house nestled near the orchard, and a 2 bedroom point house. About 15 people can be comfortably accommodated and camping is allowed in the orchard, when prior arrangements are made (porta-potties are used when there is a large attendance). Currently Dr. Wolff's granddaughter, Doroethy Leonard, owns the ranch and operates it as a spiritual center for retreats and workshops. E-mail Doroethy for more information. |
